What could have these boys so captivated?

He was so fast! We decided to leave him be, he was pretty intimidated... and BIG!
(I don't remember my sister and I doing this when we were young!)

No, but I do remember snakes crawling into the yard in New Hampshire and mom capturing them in a bucket. Then you and I would sit and watch the bucket lid to make sure the snake didn't jump out. Slightly different.
I had a feeling it was a snake! One of my sons likes to catch them. I always stand waaaaay back from him when I take a picture for him. I'm thankful for a good zoom on my camera, lol.
I knew it! :-) That's what happens around here too.
I have 3 boys (and a girl); we have seen and caught a great many snakes over the years! Enjoy those energetic boys! ;)
