A Few Notes about Apologia

One thing we will be continuing during our summer break is working our way through Apologia's Exploring Creation with Botany, by Jeannie Fulbright. Its just too much fun to give up, and the summer season is a good one for studying a variety of plants. One thing that the boys are loving about it are the hands-on experiments. Something that I love is the Botany Lab Kit that I got to accompany the book. It has made science so much LESS stressful and burdensome to me!

Almost everything we need for every project and experiment in the book is included, and what isn't included are simple things found in most households (measuring cups, water, etc.). The kit even includes tin foil and paper towels! So now we just open up the book and go with whatever is assigned for the day, with literally NO preparation on my part.

The kit comes with each lesson's materials sorted into labeled bags, so I just pull out the "Lesson 1" bag (or whatever lesson we're on) and get what I need out of it. I cannot even begin to describe how much I am loving this kit!

It is produced by Nature's Workshop Plus, which has a ton of other fun science and nature resources, but I was even more excited to find out that Christianbook.com carries it, too - since I am an affiliate, and all! ;-)

There are kits for each Apologia Exploring Creation book - Astronomy, Botany, and the Zoology series, as well. I really can't say enough about what a blessing the kit has been to me, so if you are using any of the Apologia Exploring Creation books, I highly recommend the investment!

Also, another fun Apologia development are the new Notebooking Journals for both Astronomy and Botany. My boys have always found blank notebooking pages a bit intimidating, so we've been using Live & Learn Press's Learn N' Folders. They make a great interactive notebook, but require a bit of planning and preparing effort on my part to print, cut, assemble, and glue them. After looking at the sample pages of the Notebooking Journals, I think we're going to have to give them a try when we begin Zoology (hoping that one for Zoology will be ready by then!) They look like just what we need to graduate into more "mature" notebooking, while still enjoying the process, and saving myself some time!

A Song and a Scripture for Saturday

OK, I admit, I did not come across this video by chance - it was posted by Ann at Holy Experience last week. But I loved it and had to share it here! Other than the words being so full of praise and the beat being uplifting, the video really got me thinking - all week long I've thought about it, actually!

How often is my heart bursting with praise, yet I hold it inside, trying to keep myself "composed"? Why?! I don't feel as if I am ashamed of the gospel, nor do I think I'm overly worried about the approval of man... but deep down inside I must be, if I can't give myself over to utter abandon in praise for my Most High God! So, this is an encouragement to myself and everyone else - don't be reserved in your praises for Him! Pour them out, shout them out, LIVE them out! Praise Him!!

Praise the LORD!

Praise the LORD from the heavens;
Praise Him in the heights!
Praise Him, all His angels;
Praise Him, all His hosts!
Praise Him, sun and moon;
Praise Him, all you stars of light!
Praise Him, you heavens of heavens,
And you waters above the heavens!

Let them praise the name of the LORD,
For He commanded and they were created.

He also established them forever and ever;

He made a decree which shall not pass away.

Praise the LORD from the earth,
You great sea creatures and all the depths;
Fire and hail, snow and clouds;
Stormy wind, fulfilling His word;
Mountains and all hills;
Fruitful trees and all cedars;
Beasts and all cattle;
Creeping things and flying fowl;
Kings of the earth and all peoples;
Princes and all judges of the earth;
Both young men and maidens;
Old men and children.

Let them praise the name of the LORD,
For His name alone is exalted;
His glory is above the earth and heaven.
And He has exalted the horn of His people,
The praise of all His saints—

Of the children of Israel,

A people near to Him.

Praise the LORD!

Fitness Friday - My Introduction!

Judah is 2 1/2 months now, so its about time for me to start getting back in shape! I wasn't in the best shape before I became pregnant with him, and I don't want to fall into a pattern of retaining pregnancy weight. So... I am joining in on Fitness Fridays, hosted by Brenda at The Family Revised! Since its an "Anything Goes" Friday, I'll go ahead and share my plans and goals.

As I mentioned below in my Summer Plans post, both Michael and I are desiring to be more fit. 30 has hit Michael, and its just a few months away for me, and its amazing how I already see changes in my metabolism! Which means I'll actually have to make a concerted effort, which is new for me, lol! However, since I am breastfeeding, I will not be limiting my caloric intake, but instead, changing the types of foods I eat, and limiting the amount of junk I eat. So, less sweets for me! As far as fitness goes, Michael and I will be walking together every evening. This week alone we've walked almost 10 miles! Since we're taking a summer break from homeschooling, I will also now have time in my day to fit in 20-30 minutes of weight training, which always is the catalyst for me in dropping extra pounds and firming up. My body style is more muscular, so if I don't keep my muscles toned, I just look flabby! I've got several videos that I'll use here at home with a few hand weights.

Besides all the vain reasons for being in better shape, I'm excited at the prospect of more energy and to be improving my health. I've got 5 boys to keep up with, afterall! I'm happy to be joining everyone for Fitness Friday! For more motivation, check out The Family Revised!

Summer Plans

Summer is soon to be here! Last year, we continued with more formal schooling stuff so that we could have more flexiblity for breaks during the year (which was very helpful, as several unexpected events occurred requiring random days off). However, this year, Michael has requested that we all take a good month or more of actual summer break to focus on a few other things that don't get attended to as much during our school year.

So, here are some of our plans for our summer break:
  • Lots and lots of reading! I'm going to re-read Raising Godly Tomatoes and Shepherding a Child's Heart, along with the several other books I'm already working my way through. Isaac and Ezra will be reading some chapter books, and I'll be reading aloud to the younger boys, as usual.
  • Decluttering! Yes, the thing I hate most and try to get out of doing by filling my days with busy-ness ;-) I'll have no excuse now! I want to go room by room and give each one a thorough decluttering. I found out that there is a Goodwill donation center behind our library, so each week that we go to the library, I aim to have several bags to donate. I'm tired of clutter making me feel suffocated in my own house!
  • Character training and discipline! (Hence my rereading of the aforementioned books.) Again, in the busy-ness of each normal day, little things get passed over, until they become big things that need major attention. So we'll be working on eliminating the little things before they can become big things ;-)
  • Exercise! Michael and I have agreed to go walking together each evening, while the older boys ride their bikes. I'll wear Judah, and Nate will be chauffeured in the jogging stroller by Michael, and hopefully we'll all succeed in being a little more fit. The boys don't need any help, but Michael and I do! I'm also going to fit in some weight training during the day to help with toning.
  • Study! Both Michael and I have branched out and taken on small groups at our church. Michael will be co-leading with another member and doing a study on Hebrews, while I'll be heading up one just for ladies using the book "Lies Women Believe " by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. This decision was a hard one for me, as I don't want any outside "ministry" to ever take precedence over my first and foremost ministry (my husband and children at home!), but the ladies' group will only be once a week, every other week, so Michael did not feel as if it would interfere with my responsibilities at home. I'll also be going through some of Elizabeth George's Bible Studies with my mom and sister!
  • Hospitality! We really enjoy having friends over, but often don't feel like we have the time to do it as much as we like. So we're going to make a concentrated effort to really start practicing hospitality. That in itself is a ministry!
  • Fun! Of course! Swimming at the cousins' house, visiting Stone Mountain Park, and taking time that we don't take often enough to PLAY with the kids!
Even though formal schooling will be paused for a little while, we're all looking forward to the activities our summer days will hold! Does your family have any summer plans? Feel free to leave a comment and share!

2 Months!

Judah is two months old today! Time is going by so fast, its amazing! He now weighs 11 pounds, 13 ounces, and is about 23" long. He's growing wonderfully! He has been struggling with a bit of colic and reflux, but we are working on ways to help keep him comfortable. This isn't my first baby with colic, so I keep reminding myself that this, too, shall pass and we'll all survive! ;-) It doesn't matter if I'm kept awake all hours of the night and spending my days rocking, bouncing, walking with him in my arms - whenever I look down at his sweet chubby face I'm still awed by the miracle of his life. Children truly are blessings from the Lord!!

Oh, and this cute outfit is courtesy of Amy - the monkeys are adorable!! :-D

How do we Witness?

"Witnessing" - whenever that word is spoken in Christian circles, it basically means "telling someone about Christ". However, in general language, "witness" tends to mean something that has been seen. I was contemplating that idea a few months ago, and I think its an important concept. Our witness to the world is not (just) the words we say - it has to be what is seen within us.

My heart is broken by people in the public eye who toss the word "Christian" around, yet continue to live like the rest of humanity, if not worse. Or just everyday people who claim to love the Lord and want to spread His word, yet are caught up in everything in and of the world. How can the world see Christ in us when we live exactly like they do, and have the same "pet sins" that they do?!

I am not just talking about lifestyle, or works. I do believe that once we have come to salvation, our lives will bear fruit - Matthew 5:16 says "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven"- not works to obtain salvation, but because of salvation. And I do believe it is immensely important to be separate from the world with our lifestyle. Christ makes explicitly clear that we are not to be of this world, nor caught up in what the world enjoys - our pleasure is to be found in Him, we are to be slaves to Him alone.

But even more so, I think the spirit of God shows Himself in us through our attitudes. Do we have His peace that surpasses all understanding? Or are we fretful, worrying, stressed? Do we love one another, in the way that we are truly commanded? Or do we gossip, argue, cause dissension, prefer ourselves, hold onto unforgiveness, and run others down? Are we meek and humble before others? Or are we striving for our rights and to make ourselves known before men? Do we have joy unspeakable, or are weighed down by the cares of the world? When we do stumble and make mistakes, how do we recover? In a way that demonstrates God's grace - confessing guilt and seeking forgiveness, or in the world's way - making excuses and passing blame?

I can tell my children all about the Lord and the wonderful things He has done for us, but if they do not see Christ living in me - it is for nothing, I have become nothing but another "Christian" hypocrite. My job is to live in such a way as to glorify God in all situations. Am I doing that, through my actions and attitudes? Can others see Christ in me, enough to provoke them to ask about the hope that is within?

Oswald Chambers in "My Utmost for His Highest" summed it up well in today's reading, and explains wonderfully HOW we accomplish these things:

CAREFUL UNREASONABLENESS

"Behold the fowls of the air." . . . "Consider the lilies of the field." Matthew 6:26, 28

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow, they simply are! Think of the sea, the air, the sun, the stars and the moon - all these are, and what a ministration they exert. So often we mar God's designed influence through us by our self-conscious effort to be consistent and useful. Jesus says that there is only one way to develop spiritually, and that is by concentration on God. "Do not bother about being of use to others; believe on Me" - pay attention to the Source, and out of you will flow rivers of living water. We cannot get at the springs of our natural life by common sense, and Jesus is teaching that growth in spiritual life does not depend on our watching it, but on concentration on our Father in heaven. Our heavenly Father knows the circumstances we are in, and if we keep concentrated on Him we will grow spiritually as the lilies.

The people who influence us most are not those who buttonhole us and talk to us, but those who live their lives like the stars in heaven and the lilies in the field, perfectly simply and unaffectedly. Those are the lives that mould us.

If you want to be of use to God, get rightly related to Jesus Christ and He will make you of use unconsciously every minute you live."

"Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit"

Elisabeth Elliot on Motherhood - Love has a Price Tag

This was one of my daily email devotions from Back to the Bible this week. Its a bit long, but wonderful, and well-worth the read.

Author: Elisabeth Elliot
Source: Love Has A Price Tag
Scripture Reference: Philippians 2:5-11

On Motherhood and Profanity

"OK now, which one of you clowns put that bag of M 'n' Ms in the grocery cart?" The mother looks harried.

Two boys, maybe five and seven, eye each other and race away toward the gumball machine near the supermarket door. There is an infant strapped to a plastic board on top of the groceries, and a two year old occupying the built-in child seat in the cart. The mother picks up the M 'n' M candy bag and starts toward the aisle to return it. The two year old screams and she relents, throws the bag in with the rest of her purchases, patiently waits her turn at the check-out, fishes five ten-dollar bills from her purse, receives her small change, and pushing the cart with the babies in it, herds the two boys through the rain to the station wagon in the parking lot.

I go with her in my mind's eye. Jump out in the rain. Open the garage door. Drive in. Close door. Babies, boys, bags into the house in how many trips? Phone rings. Answer phone, change baby, wipe muddy tracks from kitchen floor. Feed baby, put groceries away, hide M 'n' Ms, start peeling vegetables, take clothes out of dryer, stop fight between two older children, feed two year old, answer phone again, fold clothes, change baby, get boys to:
1) hang up coats,
2) stop teasing two year old,
3) set table.
Light oven, put baby to bed, stop fight, mop up two year old, put chicken in oven, answer phone, put away clothes, finish peeling vegetables, look peaceful and radiant--husband will be home soon.

I see this implacable succession of exigencies in my mind's eye. They come with being a mother. I also see the dreams she dreams sometimes--write a novel, agents call, reviews come in. TV interviews, autograph parties, promotional traveling, a movie contract--preposterous dreams. Try something a little more realistic. Cool modern office, beautiful clothes, make-up and hairdo that stay done all day. A secretarial job perhaps, nothing spectacular, but it's work that actually produces something that doesn't have to be done over at once. It's work that ends at five o'clock. It means something.

I know how it is. I have a mother. I am a mother. I've produced a mother (my daughter, Valerie, has a two year old and expects another child soon). I watched my own mother cope valiantly and efficiently with a brood of six. ("If one child takes all your time," she used to say, "six can't take any more.") We were--we still are--her life. I understand that. Of all the gifts of my life surely those of being somebody's wife and somebody's mother are among the greatest.

But I watch my daughter and other mothers of her generation and I see they have some strikes against them that we didn't have. They have been told insistently and quite persuasively that motherhood is a drag, that tradition is nonsense, that what people have always regarded as "women's work" is meaningless, that "roles" (a word we never bothered much about until a decade or so ago) are changing, that femininity is a mere matter of social conditioning, that it's time to innovate. If the first-grade readers show a picture of a woman driving a hook-and-ladder and a man doing a nurse's job, see what happens to the conditioning. Abolish the stereotypes and we can abolish the myths of masculinity and femininity.

I hear this sort of claptrap, and young mothers often come to me troubled because they can't answer the arguments logically or theologically. They feel, deep in their bones, that there is something terribly twisted about the whole thing but they can't put their finger on what it is.

I think I know what it is. Profanity. Not swearing. I'm not talking about breaking the Third Commandment. I'm talking about treating as meaningless that which is freighted with meaning. Treating as common that which is hallowed. Regarding as a mere triviality what is really a divine design. Profanity is failure to see the inner mystery.

When women--sometimes well-meaning, earnest, truth seeking ones say "Get out of the house and do something creative, find something meaningful, something with more direct access to reality," it is a dead giveaway that they have missed the deepest definition of creation, of meaning, of reality. And when you start seeing the world as opaque, that is, as an end in itself instead of as transparent, when you ignore the Other World where this one ultimately finds its meaning, of course housekeeping (and any other kind of work if you do it long enough) becomes tedious and empty.

But what have buying groceries, changing diapers and peeling vegetables got to do with creativity? Aren't those the very things that keep us from it? Isn't it that kind of drudgery that keeps us in bondage? It's insipid and confining, it's what one conspicuous feminist called "a life of idiotic ritual, full of forebodings and failure." To her I would answer ritual, yes. Idiotic, no, not to the Christian--for although we do the same things anybody else does, and we do them over and over in the same way, the ordinary transactions of everyday life are the very means of transfiguration. It is the common stuff of this world which, because of the Word's having been "made flesh," is shot through with meaning, with charity, with the glory of God.

But this is what we so easily forget. Men as well as women have listened to those quasi-rational claims, have failed to see the fatal fallacy, and have capitulated. Words like personhood, liberation, fulfillment and equality have had a convincing ring and we have not questioned their popular definitions or turned on them the searchlight of Scripture or even of our common sense. We have meekly agreed that the kitchen sink is an obstacle instead of an altar, and we have obediently carried on our shoulders the chips these reductionists have told us to carry.

This is what I mean by profanity. We have forgotten the mystery, the dimension of glory. It was Mary herself who showed it to us so plainly. By the offering up of her physical body to become the God-bearer, she transfigured for all mothers, for all time, the meaning of motherhood. She cradled, fed and bathed her baby--who was very God of very God--so that when we cradle, feed and bathe ours we may see beyond that simple task to the God who in love and humility "dwelt among us and we beheld his glory."

Those who focus only on the drabness of the supermarket, or on the onions or the diapers themselves, haven't an inkling of the mystery that is at stake here, the mystery revealed in the birth of that Baby and consummated on the Cross: my life for yours.

The routines of housework and of mothering may be seen as a kind of death, and it is appropriate that they should be, for they offer the chance, day after day, to lay down one's life for others. Then they are no longer routines. By being done with love and offered up to God with praise, they are thereby hallowed as the vessels of the tabernacle were hallowed--not because they were different from other vessels in quality or function, but because they were offered to God. A mother's part in sustaining the life of her children and making it pleasant and comfortable is no triviality. It calls for self-sacrifice and humility, but it is the route, as was the humiliation of Jesus, to glory.

To modern mothers I would say "Let Christ himself be your example as to what your attitude should be. For he, who had always been God by nature, did not cling to his prerogatives as God's equal, but stripped himself of all privilege by consenting to be a slave by nature and being born as a mortal man. And, having become man, he humbled himself by living a life of utter obedience, even to the extent of dying, and the death he died was the death of a common criminal. That is why God has now lifted him so high. . ." (Phil. 2:5-11 Phillips).

It is a spiritual principle as far removed from what the world tells us as heaven is removed from hell: If you are willing to lose your life, you'll find it. It is the principle expressed by John Keble in 1822:

If on our daily course our mind
Be set to hallow all we find,
New treasures still, of countless price,
God will provide for sacrifice.

A Scripture and Song for Saturday

I heard this for the first time this week and just love it. Its the gospel, plain and simple, straight from the Word of God. How can we do anything but worship Him when we realize the ransom He paid to redeem us, even while we still lost in our sin? I think it is impossible to reflect on the message of the gospel too much.

That my soul may sing praise to You and not be silent
O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever.
Psalm 30:12

Isaiah 53:5

He was pierced for our transgressions
He was crushed for our sins
The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him
And by His wounds, by His wounds we are healed

He was pierced for our transgressions
He was crushed for our sins
The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him
And by His wounds, by His wounds we are healed

We are healed by Your sacrifice
And the life that You gave
We are healed for You paid the price
By Your grace we are saved
We are saved

He was pierced for our transgressions
And crushed for our sins
The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him
And by His wounds, by His wounds we are healed

We are healed by Your sacrifice
And the life that You gave
We are healed for You paid the price
By Your grace we are saved
We are saved

He was pierced for our transgressions
He was crushed for our sins
The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him
And by His wounds, by His wounds we are healed
And by His wounds, by His wounds

What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Submission

I'm currently reading "This Momentary Marriage: A Parable of Permanence" by John Piper. It's a very good discussion on what marriage is really designed to be and what the focus of marriage is - namely, marriage is designed to be a picture of Christ and His church, and the focus of marriage, just as anything in a Christian's life, should be to glorify the Lord.

I just finished reading the chapter on wifely submission, and there were some wonderful points Piper made that I wanted to share. The chapter on submission is a discussion of 1 Peter 3:1-6:

"In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior. Your adornment must not be merely external--braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands; just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear. "

Since the Lord changed my heart about submission, this has been one of my favorite verses. It helps me to remember that regardless of Michael's walk with the Lord, it is always my responsibility before God to honor Michael as my leader and head of our family, and that rather than nagging, making sure my conduct as a Christian woman is appropriate (loving and serving with a cheerful spirit, praying faithfully, encouraging, remaining humble and submitted, and so on) is so much more effective in regards to assisting change I might hope to see in him. Also, most importantly, it reminds me not to fear being submitted - I think that is the most difficult thing, especially for women in general in this era of feminism and "me first" thinking.

Here is Piper's description of a Christian woman according to 1 Peter 3:
"A Christian woman does not put her hope in her husband, or in getting a husband. She does not put her hope in her looks or her intellegence or her creativity. She puts her hope in the promises of God. She is described in Proverbs 31:25: "Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come." She laughs at everything the future could bring because she hopes in God.

She looks away from the troubles and miseries and obstacles of life that seem to make the future bleak, and she focuses her attention on the sovereign power and love of God who rules in heaven and does on earth whatever He pleases (Psalm 115:3). She knows her Bible, and she knows her theology of the sovereignty of God, and she knows His promise that He will be with her and will help her and strengthen her no matter what. This is the deep, unshakable root of Christian womanhood."
He then goes on to list a few points about what submission is NOT:
  1. Submission does not mean agreeing with everything your husband says.
  2. Submission does not mean leaving your brain or your will at the wedding altar.
  3. Submission does not mean avoiding every effort to change a husband.
  4. Submission does not mean putting the will of the husband before the will of Christ.
  5. Submission does not mean that a wife gets her personal, spiritual strength primarily through her husband.
  6. Submission does not mean that a wife is to act out of fear.
Then he sums up with an excellent, brief summary describing what submission is:
"...submission is the divine calling of a wife to honor and affirm her husband's leadership and help carry it through according to her gifts."
Ultimately, Piper's point is, since marriage was created to be a parable of the relationship between Christ and His church, when we as wives are demonstrating the kind of submissiveness the church should demonstrate to Christ, we are giving an example to the world (and the rest of the church) how to serve and honor Christ, who laid down His life to redeem us. We are being witnesses, not just through our words, but through our very life - which is a much more powerful witness than just words, anyway!

I'm really enjoying this book. It has several chapters regarding a husband's headship, as well, that were also excellent, and chapters that I haven't yet gotten to regarding singleness, intimacy, childbearing and raising, and divorce. I'm looking forward to making my way through those chapters as well!

Encouragement Along the Way

A sweet poem from Nancy Campell at Above Rubies, helping me to remember how blessed my calling is!

YOUR HIGHEST VOCATION!

Dear happy homemakers, a wonderful breed,

God’s purpose for you is to raise a godly seed,

Children that are obedient, holy and pure,

With mother at home, they’ll be happy and secure.

Secure in God’s love and protected from the world,

Guarded from evil and grounded in God’s Word

By a mother who has embraced her calling divine,

The prophetic word God gave from the beginning of time.

You’re now planted at home, you’ve found your “glory”!

Left your job behind - that was another story!

You’ve now been promoted to a much higher career!

You’re in God’s perfect will so you don’t have to fear.

You’re nurturing, nourishing and building your nest,

Under your husband’s covering, you’re totally blessed.

God has promised to provide, He is Jehovah Jireh,

He will always be faithful, He is not a liar.

You are an “arrow polisher”, daily sharpening your arrows,

You’re not pecking on the ground like little sparrows,

But soaring like the eagle, your stature is high,

You’re changing the course of the nation as on God you rely!’

Dear mighty mothers, stand up and be strong,

Don’t be fooled by the enemy and the worldly throng,

Don’t be deceived by the “mindset” of this society,

Embrace your motherhood, it is your highest priority!

Don’t be conformed to the humanistic trend,

It only leads to heartache in the final end.

Be a non-conformist, stand against the tide,

You don’t have to be governed by this world’s pride.

Instead be transformed by God’s living Word,

He is restoring His truth, will you be stirred?

Will you be part of this end-time restoration,

To bring forth the godly seed and change the nation?

God is preparing a people for Jesus’ second appearing,

He wants an army of arrows, trained and unfearing,

Straight arrows to go forth from the parents’ bow,

The deceptions of Satan to overthrow.

May you experience God’s anointing and His daily renewing

As you become part of this revival which is all God’s doing.

You will be part of heralding the coming of the King

As you build God’s army – and His praises will ring.

Love from NANCY CAMPBELL

For my Mom

Mom, thank you for the wonderful memories you've given me to cherish. I remember making chocolates, dancing with you in front of the stove so we could see our feet, singing songs from musicals (especially those with Julie Andrews!), and playing with your pin cushion while you sewed tirelessly for me - clothes, hobby horses, little bears in houses, and so much more. I remember you letting me try anything and everything my little heart desired - from ballet and tap to ice skating and gymnastics, from violin to piano, until I finally settled on my passion - horses!

How you supported me in that desire, dropping me off so early in the mornings at the barns, allowing me to stay all day on the weekends, coming back to pick me up as the sun was setting, me, all dirty and stinky of horse. And how happy it made me! It was heaven on earth for me, I don't know what more a little horse-crazy girl could have asked for.

Then came the turbulent times, and how much trouble I caused you! I am embarrassed and ashamed in my memories. Yet, still you remained faithful to me and your dreams for me - for me to have peace, joy, and more than what I wanted for myself. How you and Daddy sacrificed to give me what I needed, and how much it broke your heart, I don't know. But it was the best for me, and you knew it, so there was no question in your mind about accomplishing it. And your dreams for me have come true - I have peace, joy, and more than I ever could have wanted for myself.

Now, as a Grandma - you are a joy to your grandsons. Your playfulness comes out as I remember it from when I was their age, with all the incredible creativity I've always envied (but seems to have passed to my sister instead of me, lol!). They so look forward to your visits and all the fun that accompanies you. And one day, hopefully soon, we'll be close enough where we can enjoy you more than once or twice a year - that is our prayer!

Thank you mom, for my life, my childhood, and the wonderful memories you've blessed me with. Proverbs 31 says "A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.... Her children arise and call her blessed" (v. 10 and 28). You are blessed, my sweet, wonderful mommy! Thank you, for all that you have given, sacrificed and loved. It does not go unrecognized!

(I posted this a while back for you, but wanted to post it again in case you missed it!)

A Scripture and Song for Saturday

The Lord reminded me of this verse recently, after I had just lamented to Michael about struggles I was having in disciplining the children. I was so encouraged I thought other moms (or anyone going through a frustrating or discouraging situation!) might be blessed by this as well!

...let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
Galatians 6:9

Let us always remember Who it is that has called us to this wonderful ministry of motherhood! He is always with us!

"Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you - He will not fail you or forsake you."
Deuteronomy 31:6

And, just for a little more encouragement, although not along the same topic - a song that I enjoy! Hallelujah! He Lives!!!

Reclaiming the Culture
Description from the Vision Forum website:
At every level of government, our rights as citizens and parents are ignored and usurped by power-hungry politicians. Our news media, universities, and entertainers actively wage war against God’s Word and those who live by it. And our children are confronted daily by the lies of evolution and the horrific realities of its “survival of the fittest” ideology.

In an effort to provide encouragement, hope, and practical instruction to Christian families, Vision Forum is pleased to release five new DVDs. These timely presentations will equip your family to understand our culture’s most critical battles and biblically fight for the rights granted to us by God, rights recognized and preserved for us by our Founding Fathers.

First Walk

Yesterday we took our first "official" nature walk of 2009! We stayed close to home because it threatened to rain, but the skies stayed clear for us. Even though the park we went to only has a paved walking trail, there were enough interesting things for the boys to collect along the way, in between running, jumping, climbing and rolling around (the joys of nature walks with boys!). Judah rode in the sling while I walked behind the boys, enjoy the light exercise and being sure to take notice of the nature around me, as well.

When we got home, while I made lunch, the boys worked on recording what they found for their nature journals. Eventually, I will encourage them to journal a bit more, such as details about the walk, the weather, and also identifying and labeling the plants they draw. But for now, just getting out for our first walk was an accomplishment in itself! ;-) Here are some samples of their journal work!

Joel's pine needles and Azalea flower:

Ezra's pine needles:
Ezra's flowers (since the flowers were white, and we had no colored paper, they used colors for the petals. But if you notice, the flowers do actually have little pink parts, so Ezra was very observant!)
Ezra also drew a Puffball mushroom (one of the few they refrained from "puffing" by stomping on them). The actual mushroom is on the table next to the paper. Again, drawing white things on white paper proves difficult (note to self: get some colored paper! What kind of homeschooling mom am I?! lol!) Oh, I think the words mean to say "Is it" near the arrow, but a few letters got transposed ;-)
Isaac's work - he has a hard time narrowing things down, so he made quite a few drawings, these are just a few:

Weakness

Over the past year, the Lord has been working on me, molding me, refining me. Teaching me quite a bit . Not about something ultra spiritual or impressive, but instead on something I desperately need - He has been teaching me about weakness.

I am not, by nature, a weak person. Growing up, the areas in my life that were weak, I compensated for by putting on a tough facade, or through rebellion. I don't like weakness. I am stubborn and strong willed, determined and motivated. I am fiercely independent and will not ask for help, and it is difficult for me to accept help when offered. I am woman, hear me roar!

But... as much as that works to get by in the world, that does not work with God. He has been showing me this - and it has not been fun! The first trimester in my pregnancy with Judah was the hardest of all five... and this postpartum time has also been the most difficult. I struggle daily, with just the basics of serving Him, keeping my home, mothering my children, and of course, being a helpmeet to Michael. I have had to confess my weakness time and time again - DAILY! - going to the Lord for His help, as well as relying on Michael and others even more, as well.

And I'm learning that this is exactly where the Lord wants me. Not hindered in such a way that I am useless to Him, but He needed to break me down so that I can understand how warped my image of strength is. My strength cannot be conjured up from the inside, as I've always tried to do. A facade of strength just doesn't work - being tough, independent, and strong willed doesn't get me through my day of loving my children and husband tenderly! My only strength comes from Him, and the only way His strength shows itself perfect is through my utter weakness! What a strange concept this has been for me to grasp!

Now, I am able to take comfort in being hopeless and helpless. Why? Because He promises to always be with me in my helplessness, and to provide me with His perfect strength. Not of my own effort (as He has taught me that my own effort is utterly pathetic), but in His abounding mercy and grace He meets me in my brokenness, loves me, and gives me life abundant! It is OK that I fail, it is OK that I am inadequate, it is OK that I am weak... for He is the perfect one, and it is through Him that I find all that He has for me! And that is where He wants me - fully surrendered and dependent upon Him. It is only there that He is truly my Lord and Savior. I am nothing without Him, and can now clearly see this. When people remark "How do you do it with 5 kids?!" I can say, truly and honestly, "Only by the grace of God!"

...but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God. But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, "LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD."
1 Corinthians 1:27-31

The LORD is my strength and song,
And He has become my salvation.
Psalm 118:14
