Every so often we get an invasion of those little, tiny ants. I have no idea what type of ant they are, so I can't get more specific, other than they are tiny, and once they show up, they seem to be everywhere and impossible to get rid of. I've tried many unnatural things (like spraying them with whatever chemicals I have on hand, including bleach, Windex, Shout, etc), and a few natural remedies, but never had much success until I came across the one I am about to share:Yep! Plain old cinnamon! Whenever the ants start showing up, I follow their little line back to their entrance location, and then I sprinkle cinnamon all over their entrance spot and their marching line, and within hours they've dispersed completely. I usually leave it down for 24 hours or so, just to be sure.
It works every time I've tried it, and its totally safe and natural! Its also pretty frugal, and convenient, if you're like my family and think cinnamon is a topping that can go on just about anything (or, maybe my kids are weird?!). Now, its not the most aesthetically pleasing remedy (if you ever come to my house and see brown dust all over the floor, you know why!), but I don't have to worry about it if the baby plays in it, or the dog licks it (the dogs actually don't notice it, oddly enough). And it makes the house smell nice! Clean up is easy, it just takes a broom and a dustpan, or a wet washrag, depending on where you've sprinkled it.
So there's a simple, easy, cheap, and natural ant control that Works for Me! To see other Works for me Wednesday posts, visit We are THAT Family!

Hey that's neat! another thing that has worked for me is Borax.... but I admit, cinnamon sounds more pleasant
That is so helpful to know. I too have used borax but I think cinnamon would be much nicer.
Great idea - I'm gona remember this.
We have 'fire ants' in Texas and I use white vinegar poured into the mound on a hot, sunny day - works for me! I shy away from poisons too!
Thank for the idea. {found you @ wfmw}
Apparently the ants here in Costa Rica do not mind the cinnamon. I have tried it and in fact still have a line outside the front door. No help, sadly.
We get invasions of those little ants from time to time. I will have to try this since they like to come in the kitchen and this would be perfectly safe around our food.
Thanks for the idea!
what a great iea
I'll have to share this with my sister. She has had ant problems for years and doesn't want anything toxic for dogs to tackle the ants.
Also, welcome on board the TOS Crew this year. From FM Laura (another mom with all boys in the house!)
I must admit I was bit skeptical when I read this post, but I tried it out on my balcony. I don't really have a trail I can follow, but they were swarming all over the pots and in the dirt my vegetables are planted in. So I sprinkled some around the rims of the pots, around the edges of the dirt, and then on the table around the pots. And you know what, it really did work!!! Now how cool is that?
The greatest way to stop them - the clicker. It's a small device you plug into the wall outlet. It emits a quiet tick that drives ants out and keeps them out. It does something to their nervous system to keep them out. We have cats and dogs - no problem. Best $12 investment for ant control!
